Red Cross Hospital OR1  installation
One of the most exciting developments in operating room (OR) design during the last decade has been the introduction of the digital theatre concept. Minimally invasive surgery is now the gold standard in many adult and paediatric surgical procedures. This
requires surgeons to interact with several technological applications to perform an operation on a patient. This is a significant
change from surgeons operating on the patient with traditional surgical instruments. Introduction of high-definition cameras and
monitors, as well as improved light sources and insufflators, has a significantly positive impact on safety and efficacy of the procedures performed.

Ergonomics in the operating room environment has become a crucial component of new theatre complex designs. This has resulted in the use of pendant-mounted monitors and equipment stacks, giving the surgeon the best possible operating position. Digital operating rooms make it possible to control the operating room environment through a touch-screen monitor or voice control. It is possible to control all endoscopic surgery equipment settings, surgical light, operating table, ceiling lights,
vessels sealing devices, to name but a few, through the user-friendly interface from within the sterile field or through the monitor at the nursing station.

Digitalisation has decreased patient turnover time, resulting in increased output. It also allows instant access to information (PACS) improves documentation and helps with the prevention of mistakes. User-friendly image storage facilities with searchable database and ability to perform telemedicine are exciting teaching tools that can be incorporated into the digital theatres.
